Sachem Girls Track Teams Compete at 71st Eddy Games

East's Rachel Paul places first in 1,500-meter run.

This weekend the Sachem East girls track and field team traveled upstate to Schenectady High School to take part in the 71st Annual William F. Eddy Invitational. Up against top athletes from all over New York State, many of the East girls were able to place in the top six in their event and score points, some setting school records in the process.

Placing first overall in the 1,500-meter run was junior Rachel Paul. Her runaway victory earned her a time of 4:35.37. It was a season best and it was more than four seconds ahead of the second place finisher. It was also Sachem East's only first place finisher of the day. 

In the shot put, the Arrows were able to place two girls in the top six. Senior Brittany Christiansen led the duo with a 38'01.50" throw and placed second overall. Brittany Sepe, a young throwing phenom for Sachem, placed fifth with a throw of 33'11.50". Christiansen returned in the discus to score more points for her team. Her throw of 107'03" was a personal best and it was enough to take the 6th and final scoring spot.

Sachem also had a fantastic showing in the relays. First, in the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Ebonie Lewis, Ashley Mercado, Essence Sterling, and Alyssa Genduso broke their own school record and placed 4th in a time of 50.53 seconds. Later on in the day, in the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Ashley Ayers, Melanie Notarstefano, Meghan Walsh, and Rachel Paul ran a time of 4:04.25. They too finished 4th overall and set a new school record.

  • Sam Eng - 100 meter high hurdles - 15th place - 17.36 seconds
  • Kristen Chiovari - Pole Vault - 16th place - 7'6"
  • Daniel Vasquez - 1500 meter run - 17th place - 5:07.23 (personal best)
  • Meghan Walsh - 400 meter dash - 19th place - 1:02.17 

Sachem North's Totals from Eddy Games and Frosh/Soph Champs

Placing for Sachem North at the Eddy games were: Melissa Michels (6th in 100-meter dash), Kayla Cataldo (6th in 400-meter hurdles and 4th in pole vault), Kelly Lavan (4th in 3,000 meters) and Kristie Michta (3rd in high jump). North finished 12th out of 33 teams in its first trip to the Eddy Games.

At this year's Freshman/Sophomore Championships help at Longwood High School, Sachem North's Katie Michta had the best performance of the day, winning the 1,500-meter racewalk in 7:27.90. North placed fourth overall in the championships.

Up next, both Sachem teams look to put up a strong performances at the Section XI Division I Championships on Tuesday and Thursday at Connetquot High School.
