East Girls Lacrosse Falls to Ward Melville

Arrows outscored 10-3 in second half.

Despite trading leads for the majority of the first half, the Sachem East's girls lacrosse team was unable to hang with Ward Melville after the break, as they fell 16-9 Friday evening.

With 13:11 to play, Emily Rogers-Healion scored one of her five goals which began a run of six unanswered goals by the Pioneers (6-3 in League I, 6-4 overall), stretching their lead to 14-8.

"I think we beat ourselves," said East coach Allison Bourgal. "We threw the ball away, we made mistakes and they capitalized."

Katie Trombetta led the Arrows (6-3, 6-4) scoring with four goals and an assist, but Sachem was unable to quell a furious Ward Melville attack that outscored them 10-3 in the second half.

The teams, along with Half Hollow Hills, are now tied for seventh place in League I.

"They were ranked one above us when we went into the game. It’s going to hurt us obviously," Bourgal said of her team's playoff chances. "It would’ve been great if we won, it would’ve helped us out a lot. But we’ve got a couple big games coming up, so hopefully that’ll help us out."

The teams were tied seven times through the early part of the second half before the Pioneers pulled away.

Jill Donodeo finally broke the string of Ward Melville goals at 5:39, but there was little fight left and even less time to make up the deficit.

Haylee Molloy, Victoria Hassett and Amanda Shelton also had goals for the Arrows.

"They’re a really good team," said Bourgal. "I think it’ll be a good matchup if we meet up again."
