East Girls Basketball beats Commack 56-37

Arrows keep a shutout going for nearly 14 minutes before allowing points.

The Sachem East Flaming Arrows held the Commack Cougars without a score for nearly 14 minutes to start the game in their League I girls basketball game on Thursday at Sachem High School East.  The Arrows played tough defense and forced Commack to take a lot of errant shots en route to a 56-37 win that improves their league record to 10-0.

The Heroes: Meagan Doherty had 14 points to lead East offensively.  Like the rest of the starters, she could have had more, but head coach Matthew Brisson chose to rest most of his starters in the fourth quarter due to the team’s big lead.  Kartie Doherty was the only other Arrow to score in double figures with 10 points.

Kathleen Everson led the Arrows in rebounds with 6.  She also contributed 8 points.  Victoria Hasset had the most assists with 5 and she also came through with 6 points.

The Turning Point: Sachem dominated this game for three quarters, allowing 0 points in the first, 5 in the second, and 10 in the third.  By the time the fourth quarter came, Brisson had all of his starters on the bench, giving his bench player a chance to get some minutes.  Commack took advantage and outscored East 22-6 in the final quarter.

Quotable: “I couldn’t be prouder,” said Brisson.  “That first half was something.  We needed to come out strong after we had played them over there.  They gave us a tough time last game.  It’s a proud program over there.  The girls knew that they needed to come out and make a statement and they really did on the defensive end.  I was very happy.  This is exciting because we’re starting to gel at the right time of the season as we move towards the playoffs.”

The Bottom Line: With 2:06 left in the second quarter, Commack’s Melissa Lobaccaro was fouled, setting up two free throws, both of which she hit.  That ended the shutout for East, but the damage was done.  Their tough defense gave them the cushion they needed and allowed them to play a pressure free second half of Sachem East basketball.  With their dominant play all season, East’s outlook is very good as they try to repeat as county champions.  They’ve shown an ability to do it all, from tough defense, to their ability to take the ball to the rim and take the outside shot.  This will be a tough team for anyone to beat going forward.

Key Stat: With all of East’s starters on the bench, Commack scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, 6 more than they scored all game to that point.
