East Field Hockey Gets Send Off from Farmingville FD

Fire trucks escort team bus to LIE en route to state championship.

Sirens and horns blared from two Farmingville Fire Department trucks on Granny Road and North Ocean Avenue Friday morning. It was for a good reason though this time.

They escorted the coach bus carrying Sachem East's field hockey team to the Long Island Expressway. The girls are headed to Syracuse where they will compete in the New York State Class A semifinals Saturday against Greene High School (Section IV).

Last week, Sachem (19-1) beat Ward Melville to win the Suffolk County championship and Massapequa to win a Class A Long Island title, the first in program history.

“We’ve always had a good team and good program, but we never had the hardware,” said Sachem coach Tina Moon. “So now that we do, this is a very special feeling. This team is a very special team and works really hard. It’s been a moment that they’ll never forget.”

Moon knows what it feels like to have the attention, having competed in three-straight state championships as a high school player at Centereach in the 1980s.

“I think the girls are enjoying it,” she said. “I think they’re ready.”
