Sachem East Dominates Floyd, Doherty Scores Career Point No. 1,000

Sachem continues its surge of dominance amidst historic night.

It didn't take long for Meagan Doherty to get her historic moment out of the way Friday night. Just two points from the 1,000th point of her career prior the game, Doherty scored on her first shot, a layup off a rebound 14 seconds into the contest.

Doherty led all scorers with 25 points, including four three-pointers, in Sachem's 71-37 route of William Floyd in a League I home game.

"It feels really good to reach this huge milestone," she said. "I’ve been around for awhile and I missed time with the injury and missed a lot of games throughout the years, but I finally reached it."

Sachem (3-0 in League I) opened with a 9-0 lead, 8 points of which came from Doherty, who nailed consecutive three-point shots after her historic basket.

The Arrows led 23-9 after the first quarter, but ran into slight foul trouble in the second. Still, with a comfortable 38-18 lead heading into the third quarter, Sachem opened its offensive flood gates and dropped another 28 to take a commanding 66-25 lead behind 14 points from Doherty alone in the quarter.

Besides her older sister Kristen Doherty and Sachem legend Nicole Kaczmarski, who is set to have her  retired on Saturday, there are only four other players from Sachem girl's basketball history who have scored 1,000 or more points in their careers: Lori Durham (Sachem), Barbara Durham (Sachem), Kathy O'Reilly (Sachem), and Jessica Merrihue (Sachem and Sachem East).

"For four years that kid has been somebody else’s sister," Brisson said. "I’ve known all along that she’s got great game. She’s healthy, she’s making shots, she’s playing free and easy and she deserves the accolades that she’s getting."

, a sophomore at Boston College, holds the Sachem scoring record with 2,277 points and ranks seventh all-time in Long Island history. , who played one of her varsity seasons at Longwood, scored 2,583 points, good enough for the Suffolk County career record and No. 2 on Long Island behind Garden City's Bethany LeSeuer (3,167).

The Doherty sisters are on pace to pass Kaczmarski and her sister Carrie (3,400-plus) as the highest scoring sister duo in district history. The Durham sisters also combined for more than 2,400 points.

"That was always kind of our goal from when we were younger and watched Kaz play," she said. "We wanted to be like them and have the name. We worked hard to get that together."

Sachem East will travel to cross-town rival Sachem North on Saturday for a special night where Kaczmarski will be the first female athlete to have her jersery retired in any sport at Sachem. It's also the return for Brisson to his old stomping grounds at North.

"It’s nervewracking," he said. "I don’t feel like a visitor going to that gym. I have as many roots there as I have anywhere else. It’s going to be a fun day."
