East Boys Cross Country Team Wins County Title

Boys capture first championship in 13 seasons.

The Sachem High School East boys cross country team won its first county title in 13 years.

Led by senior captain Michael Richards and junior Alex Saavedra, the Flaming Arrows won countless invitationals this season, including the Suffolk Coaches, Suffern at Bear Mountain, and the renowned competition at Manhattan College, which is a first in Sachem history.

The team  earned a third-place finish at the Brown University Northeast Cross-Country Championship, which features the best teams from the entire Northeast region.

The Arrows took two seconds off the school's previous 5K record, set in 1996, by completing the Sunken Meadow 5K course with an average time of 17 minutes 14 seconds, according to a release from the district.

In addition to their performance on the course, the Boy's Cross Country team also boasts success in the classroom as 19 of the team's 41 members were named scholar athletes by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, a release said.
