Doug Shanahan Traded to Long Island Lizards

Sachem alum returns to native island in MLL.

Sachem alum Doug Shanahan was traded from the expansion Charlotte Hounds to his hometown Long Island Lizards, as announced by both teams on Friday morning.

Shanahan, who graduated from Sachem in 1997 and was the first Tewaaraton winner as the top men's lacrosse player in the country at Hofstra, was traded for a seventh round pick in the 2014 MLL Draft.

"Just got traded to Lizards," Shanahan said via Twitter @DougShanahan. "I'm going home to the Dutch Dome."

The Lizards play their home games at James M. Shuart Stadium at Hofstra, where Shanahan was a two-sport star and has his No. 26 lacrosse jersey retired. The number is also retired at Sachem. That field located just off Hempstead Turnpike is where Shanahan also gained notoriety in football, becoming one of the strongest defensive backs in Division I-AA and nearly making the New York Jets out of training camp with a free agent contract in 2001.

Today Shanahan is the head lacrosse coach at Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. He played one game with Long Island in 2009 before retiring from lacrosse until this season when he was selected by Charlotte in the expansion draft.

He is an MLL veteran, having played in eight seasons from 2003-2009 with Bridgeport, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

The Lizards open their 2012 season Saturday, April 28 at home against the Baltimore Bayhawks.
