Doherty Named Suffolk County Player of the Year

Senior hoops player from Sachem East takes home top honor.

Sachem East senior Meagan Doherty was named the Suffolk County High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year, announced Thursday night by the Suffolk County High School Girls Basketball Coaches Association.

Doherty, who is also All-Long Island, All-County, All-League and All-Patch this season, was one of the top scorers on Long Island this season, leading Sachem to the Suffolk County semifinals where the Arrows lost to Hauppauge.

"I feel very honored to be recognized by the coaches association," Doherty said, "however, I would never have been able to reach this level of success without the support of my teammates, coaches, trainers and especially my family over the years."

Doherty is the first girls basketball player from Sachem since Nicole Kaczmarski (1999) to earn county player of the year honors. Her sister Kristen Doherty, a sophomore on the hoops team at Boston College, did not win the award as a senior at Sachem East, but did set the school scoring record. North Babylon's Bria Hartley, now playing at Connecticut, won it instead that year.

Sachem East's Katie Doherty was also named All-County this season.
