Championship Preview: Sachem East vs. Ward Melville for Field Hockey Title

Arrows and Patriots in rematch of last year's Class A final.

The rematch that Sachem East has been waiting for has finally arrived. The Arrows will have a chance to avenge last year's loss in the county finals Thursday as they take on Ward Melville again.

On the same turf at Newfield High School, top-seeded Sachem has the chore of playing a team it beat twice in the regular season. The same Ward Melville group that knocked off second-seeded Smithtown East earlier this week in the Suffolk Class A semifinals.

This season Sachem East has been the top A school on Long Island. During the playoffs the Arrows beat Lindenhurst, 2-0, in the quarterfinals and beat Bay Shore, 2-1, in the semifinals. Both games saw large offensive outputs by Sachem, but low scoring totals. Expect more fire power on Thursday.

“We have a bitter taste in our mouth because we didn’t capitalize last year and I felt like we outplayed [Ward Melville] at one point,” Sachem coach Tina Moon said. “We’re ready and we want this game.”

Look for the usual big hitters in Katie Trombetta, Jess Caruana, Kristen Bagley, Kayla McKeveny, Katie Doherty and the rest of the supporting cast to come through for the Arrows.
