Catching Up with Davon Lawrence

Former running back red shirted his freshman year at Stony Brook.

is arguably one of Sachem's greatest athletes of all-time. From his elusive football abilities to flash-like track skills and strong basketball presence, he did it all.

This past fall he spent his first semester in college as a red shirt freshman at Stony Brook University. He's one of many former high profile Long Island high school football players looking for playing time next season.

At Sachem, Lawrence helped lead the Arrows to a 10-1 record in 2009 and a bid at the Suffolk County Division I title. He finished his career as the fourth all-time leading rusher in school history with 2,116 yards and 27 touchdowns. His 10.4 yards per carry average in 2009 and 9.3 yards per carry for his career were both records when he graduated and were broken this year by Dalton and Trent Crossan.

His 1,887 yards in 2009 is the second highest single-season total in school history. He also had 72 career solo tackles and 54 career unassisted tackles on defense and was named team and offensive MVP in 2009, as well as All-Long Island, All-Suffolk County and All-Division and was named Division I player of the year.

This week, Sachem Patch caught up with Lawrence on Facebook.

Chris R. Vaccaro: You're first semester of college is already over. It went fast. What was it like? Was it what you expected?

Davon Lawrence: It was a lot harder then high school, but pretty much everything I expected.

CRV: You red shirted, right? What did that mean for you.

DL: I did it to prepare myself more physically and mentally for spring ball and next season.

CRV: Did you take the trip down to South Florida this year? If so, what was that experience like?

DL: Yes, great experience for me. I got to see a higher level of football and what it's like at the college level. The crowd was crazy. It was definitely the craziest game I've ever been part of.

CRV: Now next year you'll be down in South Texas, another awesome experience. What's your mindset as you anxiously wait for the 2011 season to start?

DL: The same mindset I had going into this season… just do what the coaches ask and stay on top of my workouts and school work.

CRV: Speaking of coaches, how is it playing for coach Chuck Priore? What's the difference compared to coach Dave Falco at Sachem?

DL: There's really no difference. Both coaches want to win football games. Coach Falco is the greatest coach I've ever had and I don't believe I will come across another coach like him.

CRV: Were you able to catch any Sachem games in 2010? The team was amazing again this year, maybe even better than your '09 team.

DL:  I wasn't able to attend a lot because I was in season, but I was able to attend both Floyd games. I also thought it was a better team because a lot of younger guys returned.

CRV: Being at Stony Brook you have plenty of Long Island natives on the team. What's that like? Having Brock Jackolski, JeVahn Cruz, Miguel Maysonet and Eddie Gowins must be nice.

DL: It's real cool to learn from guys like them and actually watching what they can do. They're all cool guys and we get along well.

CRV: On the field, is there some question with whether or not you'll play offense or defense next year? What do you prefer?

DL: No, as of right now I'm still on the offensive side of the ball, but there has been talk about me playing defense.

CRV: What do you feel about that?

DL: I prefer offense.

CRV: Looking back on your Sachem career, what are you most fond of today?

DL: To really have gotten Sachem football going again and getting a chance to play at the next level.

CRV: And lastly, what kind of goals have you set for yourself in college, both in football and the classroom?

DL: To get my degree and be a part of this program.
