Brendan Garry Named Suffolk Catcher of the Year

Was a rock behind the plate and an offensive threat every time he was up at bat.

Sachem North's Brendan Garry was named the Ryan T. Caulfield Suffolk County Catcher of the Year this week.

Garry, who was named All-League, All-County, All-Long Island and All-Patch, hit .440 in 2011. He recorded 37 hits, 4 homers, 24 RBI and scored 22 runs. He had a .531 on-base percentage and only made two errors all season behind the plate.

"He's an extremely hard worker," said Sachem coach Tom Gambino, "a leader."

Without his presence behind the plate, Sachem would not have had the success it did this season, winning a Suffolk title for the first time in 24 years.

"He's great at calling a game with our pitchers," Gambino said. "He's the vocal leader of the team."

Sachem pitchers combined for a 1.83 team ERA this season and there were very limited steal attempts against the Flaming Arrows.

Garry, who played in the RTC Grand Slam Challenge last week as a Suffolk all-star, will attend Rochester University to play college baseball.

"It's an honor to be given the award because Caulfield was an amazing player and from what I've heard an amazing person," Garry said.

Calhoun's Jake Thomas and Alex Falconi from St. Mary's also won the RTC Catcher Award for Nassau County and the Catholic High School Athletic Association, respectively.

"Those guys are studs and to be in a group with them is a great accomplishment," Garry said.

As for the 2011 season, Garry is in awe of the success Sachem garnered.

"This season was unreal," he said. "We knew from the beggining we had a great squad with strong leaders and the bond we had was great; just as our work ethic, the pitching, timely hits and strong defense were the reason we won the Suffolk County title."

Sachem's Alec Sole also won this year's as the top player in Suffolk County.
