Billy Alvino Promoted to High A Ball with Tigers

Sachem East alum gets called up to next level of minor league system.

Former Sachem East baseball standout and Holtsville resident Billy Alvino has been promoted to High A in the Detroit Tigers' minor league system.

Alvino, who started the season with the West Michigan Whitecaps, is already on the active roster of the Lakeland Flying Tigers as of Thursday afternoon.

A 2005 graduate of East, Alvino, a catcher, hit .262 in 30 games with the Whitecaps and piled up a slugging percentage of .298 and an on-base percentage of .398. He also has 22 hits, 15 walks and 1 RBI.

Last season he spent 13 games with Lakeland and hit .268 with two doubles and three RBI.

Alvino is one of two former Sachem baseball players performing on this level. Mike Parisi is a pitcher for the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs and graduated from Sachem in 2001.
