Alyssa Gutierrez Signs with Binghamton Soccer

Standout goalkeeper is one of the best to ever play at Sachem.

Sachem East’s Alyssa Gutierrez signed her letter of intent to play Division I soccer at SUNY Binghamton Friday afternoon at the high school.

Gutierrez, a four-year varsity letterwinner and two-year starter in net, is one of the best keepers to ever play for Sachem. She recorded 27 career wins, 22 of which were shutouts.

“She comes up with the big save,” East girls soccer coach Ralph Forman said. “We’re certainly going to miss her.”

For two consecutive seasons, Gutierrez was named all-state, all-Long Island, and Suffolk County Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as all-Sachem Patch First Team in 2010.

As a freshman, she played in the Long Island championship game against Massapequa, a moment that Forman said allowed East to win that title thanks to, “her athletic ability.”

As for Binghamton, she liked the campus and potential with the soccer program.

“It had everything that I wanted academic wise and I liked the team,” she said. “It was perfect for me.”

The Bearcats finished seventh in the America East Conference last year and sported an overall record of 4-11-2.

Currently there are two freshmen goalies on the roster, Stephanie Speirs and Carrie Martin, so Gutierrez will have to work hard to make it as a starter.

“I’m going to have to fight my way up to the top if I want to play,” she said.
