Alvino Participating in Prospect Tournament

One of 19 players from Can-Am League selected for inaugural event.

Sachem East alum Billy Alvino will be competing in the inaugural Independent League Prospect Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla. from February 24-March 4.

Alvino, who graduated from East in 2005, was signed by the Detroit Tigers after four seasons at High Point University. He was released by the Tigers early last season and hooked up with the Newark Bears of the Can-Am League.

According to the Bears, the tournament in Florida will consist of four teams each playing eight to 10 games, with doubleheaders each day at 1:00 p.m. The semifinals will be held on March 3 at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. with a championship game set for March 4 at 1:00 p.m.

Tournament Director Nick Belmonte said the format will be attractive to major league organizations to check out potential free-agent signees.
