2011 Sachem Patch Athletes of the Year

Athletes from various sports grab honors at East and North this year.

Showing versatility in Sachem's athletic programs at East and North, four athletes who specialize in four different sports were selected as Sachem Patch Athletes of the Year.

Every varsity coach in Sachem has the opportunity to vote for a male and female athlete at the school they coach at. Sachem Patch also gets one editorial vote for all four selections: one male and female at East and North.

Jesse Scanna was named the Sachem Patch Male Athlete of the Year for North, while Kayla Cataldo won Female Athlete of the year. Sean O'Malley and Victoria Hassett were the respective winners at East.

, Sachem Patch Male Athlete of the Year (North): Jesse Scanna will go down as one of Sachem football's all-time greats. He is only the second player in school history to play varsity football as a freshman (there have been two others since). Scanna, who will play linebacker at Cortland, rushed 169 times for 1,531 yards and 17 touchdowns at Sachem, ranking him as the 11thall-time leading rusher in school history. , Sachem Patch Female Athlete of the Year (North): Kayla Cataldo will run track & field at the University of Rhode Island next year. She has set and broken many school records during her time in winter and spring track at Sachem North. From the pole vault records she broke numerous times to recently qualifying for states again this season in that event, Cataldo's numbers continued to grow in every area of her game. She was also a strong leader who helped continue the success of Sachem track & field.

, Sachem Patch Male Athlete of the Year (East): Sean O'Malley is one of the greatest athletes Sachem East has had in its short history. His resume speaks for itself. His 140 career wins are the most in school history. He was a New York state qualifier and Suffolk County finalist. O'Malley, who will wrestle at Maryland, was a two-time All-County selection and the 2011 League I Champion and Outstanding Wrestler.
