2011 Preview: Sachem East Girls Lacrosse

Young group could be force to be reckoned with in the future.

At first glance, the Sachem East girls lacrosse roster seems balanced with a mixture of young and veteran talent. But the coaches association ranked the girls 16th to start the season and the Arrows are fine with that.

An easier schedule should allow Sachem to finish at least .500 and be a threat for the next few years with this season being the catapult needed.

With players like freshman Katie Trombetta coming up through the ranks and senior Victoria Hassett looking to finish her high school career on a high note, expect Sachem to make some noise down the stretch.

The girls opened up the season with a close 9-8 loss to Miller Place and a huge 16-5 win over Whitman.

Head coach: Allison Bourgal, second year, Sachem alum from the Class of 2003

2010 Results: 6-10 overall, according to Section XI

Attack: Seniors Melissa McKeveny and Jacquie Morrison will be featured on the top attack like. Bourgal said the other attack positions will be up for grabs until the season is in full swing.

Midfield: With names like Trombetta, Hassett and Jill Donodeo leading the charge, other teams should be worried. Trombetta (29g, 8a) and Donodeo (23g, 10a) combined for 52 goals last season. Jackie Wasilko and Katie Doherty, two other freshmen, will be popular names in this program for years to come, so get used to their contributions this season.

Defense: Senior Kara McCabe will be the leader on defense, along with fellow senior Meg Nee. Karyn Ryan and Jordan Miller, two converted field hockey players, will get a go on defense as well.

Goalie: Kyle Larkin and Jen Gazdick will hold up shop in net. “Whoever is playing better will start,” Bourgal said.

Expectations: “We have a lot of young players, a lot of talent,” Bourgal said. “I have high expectations. We have a really good schedule. Everyone is ranked around the same as us. Everybody is beatable. It’s really just who shows up that day.”
