2011 Preview: Sachem East Boys Lacrosse

A look at how the Arrows will fair this season.

Sachem East is young. Quick, agile and ready to win, but young.

The Arrows were seeded 12th out of 24 teams to start the season, which offers them hope in terms of being a middle of the pack sort of team. Anything is possible at this point.

The coaching staff is hoping to play sound, fundamental lacrosse and take each game as a new challenge and hurdle.

Offensively the team may only have three seniors on the field at any given time.

Head Coach: Rob Murphy, 6th season as head coach

Key Loses

  • Craig Goodermote, Playing at Marist
  • John Grebe, Playing at Molloy
  • Pete Lacagnina, Playing at C.W. Post
  • Nick Massaro, Playing at Adelphi
  • Cameron Walsh, Playing at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian

Attack: Eric Martin, A.J. Solomito and John Vigh will be the main offensive threats up top. Martin and Vigh split time on the first attack like last season. Solomito led the team with 11 assists last year.

Midfield: Garrett Smith, Anthony Laureano and sophomore Tom Engleken make up the first midfield, followed by Rob Newberg, Joe Eiseman and Chris MacAneney.

Face-off: Laureano, Eiseman, Newberg and Engleken will all see time in the circle.

Defense: Look for Anthony Vaccaro, John Carroll and James Hockenjos to be in the mix. Dan Grebe will play long stick.

Goalie: There are three capable options in Dan Cakouros, Eric Poppito, and Kevin Racinello. “It’s good in a way because it keeps it competitive,” Murphy said.

Depth: Matt Donohue can play attack and midfield. Jason DeBenedictis, a freshman, will see some time after looking good in winter workouts. On defense, D.J. Lynott might break into the starting lineup.

Expectations: “We’re young,” Murphy said. “At any given time we might have four or five sophomores starting.” Asked if he thinks East is a playoff team, he said, “Everybody’s good. You never know.”
