Wenonah Students Begin Kindness, Justice Challenge

Students honoring Dr. King through character education program.

Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem School District has initiated a two-week Kindness & Justice Challenge from January 19 through January 29. The challenge honors the values of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as reinforces the ideals of the district's Character Education program.

Each week, the students focus on how their New Year's resolutions could benefit their families, school and community through a particular act of kindness or justice. During the first week, the students are encouraged to write two resolutions centered around an act of kindness on a handout. For the second week, they are asked to write two new resolutions focused on acts of justice. Examples of student resolutions include helping siblings with homework, doing chores at home, and standing up for someone who is being made fun of. The students creatively colored their individual handouts each week and displayed them throughout the hallways of Wenonah Elementary.

During the Kindness & Justice Challenge, classroom teachers also engaged students in character education activities and discussions focused on tolerance, diversity, respect, fairness and integrity. Principal Christine DiPaola called the program an "inspiring two weeks when our students learn some of the most important of life's lessons."
