Waverly, Sachem East Using Twitter

Social media allows principals to communicate more effectively.

Last year Sachem East Principal Rory Manning posted information about a student looking to grab a spot on on Twitter and media outlets came calling.

“This provided such momentum to our story and really united our school behind the effort,” he said. “The entire Twitter experience has been very positive and I am constantly encouraging our parents and students to sign up.”

As of early March, Manning has a little over 100 followers on the school’s Twitter feed and he posts anything from congratulatory remarks (“Congrats to our Field Hockey Team who will be recognized at this evening's Board of Education Meeting. Way to go East!!”) to helpful tips about school events (“Don't miss our musical!! Tickets for The Drowsy Chaperone are on sale at the school store and can be purchased at the door. 3/10-12, 7:30pm”).

“I have found the service to be tremendously useful in disseminating valuable information for students and parents,” Manning said. “I regularly use Twitter to share the great accomplishments of our students as well as valuable information for parents.”

Dennis Kelly, the principal at Waverly Avenue Elementary School, recently joined the Twitter bandwagon and is slowly building a following.

“I am new at the whole thing but I feel it is a great way to connect with our community,” he said.

Waverly is also undergoing a website redesign and will offer a “digital backpack” with everything digitalized that a student brings home in his or her backpack.
