Tecumseh Donates Over 500 DVDs to Military

Through student's father, who serves in the Navy, elementary school gathered goods and shipped to Afghanistan.

Students and staff at Tecumseh Elementary School participated in the second “DVDs For Overseas” DVD drive for the soldiers in Afghanistan.

Fifth grade teacher Tara Meade, has a student whose father is currently serving as a Commander in the Navy, stationed in Afghanistan. Working with him on getting a U.S. contact in Afghanistan, the DVDs were shiped to a base in Bagram, Afghanistan.

With such success on the first DVD drive in 2007 where the Commander put the school in contact with a hospital in Iraq, Meade decided to run a second drive when she moved to fifth grade last year and had the same student in class.

This drive was opened up to all Sachem buildings and over 500 DVDs were collected through them. They also sent dozens of energy drinks and movie posters along as well.

Another special touch was added when Tecumseh music teacher Robert Normandeau assisted students in rewriting the lyrics to the chorus song, “Waka, Waka.”

“The lyrics reflected our drive and the students recorded the song and sent it with the packages,” said Meade.

“On behalf of all of us serving in Afghanistan, I wanted to take the time to write my thanks to you and your students for the generous and much appreciated gift of DVDs as well as the beautiful song the students sang,” wrote U.S. Air Force Captain Lance K. Giannone, who accepted the care package, and emailed periodically with Meade. “The DVDs and “Waka, Waka” will be a great help when spirits are low, and are a most pleasant reminder of the kind generosity and consideration of our friends at Tecumseh Elementary School. Please give a great big heart-felt thank you to your students for their hard work and thoughtfulness.  The students at Tecumseh Elementary School are much appreciated and are our heroes.”
