Seneca Students Raise Money for African Organization

Send check to BULA to help purchase shoes for children.

Last month, Seneca Middle School participated in a week-long fundraiser designed to enlighten students and staff that many children go without shoes because of a lack of resources.

This event was part of the national “One Day Without Shores” day, meant to raise awareness to the conditions in some Third World countries.

During this week students at Seneca were asked to donate through their homerooms towards this cause.  The highest contributing homerooms in each grade were promised a bagel breakfast and all contributors names were placed in a raffle.

In five school days, the school raised over $900. The donation will be made to the Better Understanding of Life in Africa (BULA) organization.

“The results were spectacular,” said Dave Sheehan, a guidance counselor at Seneca.

According to Sheehan, BULA is an agency that runs a school and residential facility in Uganda.  Many of their students come from families who are destitute and cannot provide for their basic necessities.

“Our donation will go a long way to provide shoes, and as a result, improved health for these children,” he said.

In late April, Thomas Fricke, a representative of BULA from Bayport, came to Seneca to accept a check for $904 from the students and faculty. Plans are underway for a SKYPE conference between the two schools.

“It is hoped that this is the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship resulting in a greater understanding and appreciation for life in far away countries,” Sheehan said.
