Sachem to Host SEPTA Open House

Event will serve as forum with breakout sessions for parents to learn more to benefit their children.

The Sachem Central School District, through its Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA), is offering an open house for parents to learn about the many opportunities their children have in the district.

The event will be an open forum to start and then break into a more informal setting where the parents will have the opportunity to approach school personnel to ask further questions and gain more information.

It coincides with Sachem SEPTA's first meeting of the 2011-2012 school year and will take place in the Sachem Administrative Annex connected to Samoset Middle School and Sachem's District Offices on September 26 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The open house will mostly consist of support staff: Speech/Language Teachers, Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, School Psychologists, Physical Education Teachers (more precisely Adaptive PE), and other areas as well.

“We will be covering a wide variety of topics, such as course offerings, transitional services, types of diplomas that can be earned by special education students, and a wide variety of other special services that are offered by the given personnel,” said Matthew Jurgens, a special education teacher and principal’s aide at Tecumseh Elementary in Farmingville.

“This is wonderful,” said Melissa Brown, an RTI Specialist at Tecumseh, Lynwood and Chippewa Elementary Schools. “Nothing brings a community together more than the sharing of knowledge and comfort created by deeper understanding.  This night is intended to do just that.”
