Sachem Students, Volunteers Raise $35,000 for Hospital

Stony Brook Children's Hospital benefits from "Change for Children."

Students from the Sachem school district, and the school's head nurse delivered a check for $35,000 to the Stony Brook Children's Hospital.

The initiative, called "Change for Children," involved students and leaders from all over the island, including Blue Point and Mount Sinai, by asking volunteers to collect spare change from their family members and friends. Change for Children seeks to encourage students to lend a hand to pediatric patients at the Stony Brook hospital.

The volunteers from Sachem included Kathy Connor of Merrimac Elementary School, Natalie Zaino, Sachem lead nurse, Brandon Roslak of Sachem High School East and Gia O'Connor of Lynwood Elementary School.

“We are very grateful for the contributions of students, the support of the school nurses and superintendents, and the leadership of a highly dedicated group of volunteers,” Margaret M. McGovern, MD of Stony Brook University School of Medicine said in a release. “Their efforts will help improve healthcare for children across Suffolk County and Long Island who come to Stony Brook Children’s for their care.”

The $35,000 raised was matched by an anonymous donor, raising the total donated to $70,000.
