Sachem Student Wins Essay Contest

Kaylie Mancino wrote an essay on the topic, "I feel creative when …"

Sachem elementary student Kaylie Mancino won the primary grades category of this year’s school essay contest sponsored by the Long Island Presidents’ Council of New York State United Teachers. The topic was “I Feel Creative When...”

Her essay will be aired, in her own voice, on eleven radio stations at the start of the school year in September. Twelve finalists were selected this year, from thousands of essays submitted.

Each finalist was requested to submit a taped recording of the winning essay and final selections were based on content, clarity, sincerity, and spoken delivery.

In her prize-winning essay, Mancino wrote that she felt especially creative when she competed in her school’s science fair, and was the only one to build a lava lamp. She recaptured the same feeling when she competed in her school’s talent show.
