The held its annual awards night for varsity seniors from both Sachem North and East High Schools. The event, held on June 11, recapped a year of achievement for many varsity teams, and gave the district an opportunity to recognize its outgoing class of athletes.
This year the awards night was held at the Sachem North campus; next year the ceremony switches to the East campus.
“I think it’s a great night,” said Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg. “Most of these kids are picked by the coaches. These are highly motivated, highly talented kids, and it’s a great way to give them recognition without taking away from everyone else.”
One of the more highly noted scholarships, the Award for Outstanding Senior Male Athlete, went to Colin Eberhardt, representing Sachem North, and Morgan Genoino, from Sachem East. Van Norr, for whom the award is named, was a rising star athlete, a prospective class of 1960 graduate of Sachem High School, tragically killed in an automobile accident in the midst of his junior year. (Click on his name for Patch’s full account of his story) Van Norr played three varsity sports: baseball, soccer and wrestling. The award is presented to seniors who play three varsity sports, and exemplify Van Norr’s lasting legacy.
Some of the other winners include Erin McNulty, Jessica Caruana and Rachel Paul, recipients of the Linda Otten Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, and Colin Eberhardt, Kristina Michta, William Silber and Pamela Emengo, recipients of the Thomas J. Sabatelle Senior Scholar/Athlete Award.
