UPDATE: Sachem Preparing for Another St. Baldrick's Run

District administrators raising money and losing hair.

Sachem teachers and administrators might already be losing hair from the stress of budget crunching and fiscal restraints, but they're about to lose even more next week.

Sachem East will host another St. Baldrick's event, hoping to top last year's mark of over $15,000. The school set a goal of $17,001 was broken already and is at $20,658 as of Sunday, March 20 at 6 p.m.

Among the many participants this year are Sachem Superintendent James Nolan, Sachem East football coach Mark Wojciechowski, Sachem East Principal Rory Manning, who had his head buzzed last year as well, and Sachem East Assistant Principal Carol Todaro.

Not surprisingly, Nolan, who is doing this in memory of his father and to support many members of his own family and the Sachem family who have suffered from cancer, has raised $2,760 so far, more than his initial goal of $1,000.

"We actually have a North student currently looking for a bone marrow match and several staff members currently battling cancer," he said. "Earlier in the year we lost a very special teacher and friend at Nokomis.  If all that I have to do is shave my head to raise money for a wonderful cause, I think it is asking very little on my part. It would certainly be an answer to my prayers to raise thousands of dollars and find a match for our North student. More importantly, I pray that one day soon there will be a cure for cancer."

Nearly 70 shavees have already signed up for the event, which will take place March 21 at 1 p.m.

St. Baldrick's is the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising unit for childhood cancer research. At Foundation events all throughout the year, volunteers shave their heads to raise funds. Like marathon runners, "shavees" collect donations from friends, family and associates. The foundation receives these funds and makes grants to research experts.
