Sachem Patch Whiz Kids

Every week Sachem Patch will honor one deserving student in the Sachem Central School District with the title, "Whiz Kid."

Whiz Kids: Kayla Cholpan and Michael Higgins

Age(s): 12 & 12

School: Sagamore Middle School GATE program

Accomplishment: Kayla & Michael, as a team, have won second place in the middle school division of The Stock Market Game on Long Island.

Key to Awesomeness:  In sixth grade GATE, the students were taught lessons on stock market basics and the best time to buy and sell stocks, next, the entire class was broken up into teams of two and finally, each team was given $150,000 to spend on stocks of their choice. Michael and Kayla displayed persistence and drive when purchasing and selling their stocks. While they did not always see eye to eye on purchases they learned to compromise which paid off when they received 2nd place in the middle school division of The Stock Market Game.  They have been invited to a brunch at Hofstra University to receive an award next month. Sachem's GATE teachers congratulation them on their achievement!
