Before fans had a chance to settle down in their seats, Kevin Bregaglia took the opening kickoff down the sideline for a touchdown and North never looked back as they defeated Sachem East in the rival Nor'Easter game 21-14 today.
In a game that featured mostly defense, Bregaglia pitched in with a big interception to stifle a solid third-quarter drive and the defensive line limited big plays from East's Steven Casali in the first half, to take a 13-0 lead. Bregaglia also scored the second touchdown of the game, snagging a bobbling pass from between defenders and taking the ball into the endzone with just :40 to go before halftime.
East made it 13-7 in the fourth quarter on a dazzling catch and run from Brian Balsamo, but on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, North's Malick Pierre squirted through a hole and took the ball 68 yards to help maintain a two possession lead.
"The offensive line did a great job blocking, and I just found the hole," Pierre said after the game.
East fought back with a drive of their own, scoring on a 1-yard play from Quarterback Danny Wolff. Needing the ball back with under three minutes to play, East couldn't stop North from converting two first downs and they iced the game with a kneel-down.
"It was a great game," a disappointed Coach Mark Wojciechowski said. "I thought we had a defensive plan that would work for us. I'm proud of the way they played. We gotta move on to the next game and take care of it."
"They did a great job against what we do and we have to give them credit," North Coach Dave Falco said. "A great football game; the Sachem community has got a lot to be proud of. It was a battle, but I was expecting that," he added. "I wasn't expecting anything less today.
Sachem North, now 4-0, faces Northport on the road next week. Sachem East (2-2) travels to Longwood.
