Sachem North Takes Its Turn at Going Bald

Students, faculty shave heads for cancer awareness, research.

Students and teachers from Sachem North took to the buzzer Friday to have their heads shaved in hopes of raising awareness for cancer research and funding through the St. Baldrick’s foundation.

They raised over $3,400, which will go to St. Baldrick’s in honor of Superintendent James Nolan’s father, and the Marty Lyons Foundation, another organization devoted to children with cancer.

Students poured into the gymnasium at North and watched the annual March Madness tournament while the haircutting took place.

North Principal John Dolan, as well as his Assistant Principals Ken Costa and Andy Larson all got buzzed. Others included lacrosse coach Jay Mauro, assistant lacrosse coach Paul Benway, coach Gary Comstock, track coach Rich O’Brien, track coach Joe Zarzycki, track and soccer coach Ryan Stillufsen and former lacrosse player and coach Ralph Pepe.

“We are just so proud of the students at North who truly understand that when everyone does a little bit, so much can be accomplished,” said Dolan. “This is a great group of kids and they truly deserve all of the credit. Because of their incredible spirit and work ethic, I do believe that a Sachem student will be the one who finds a cure for cancer.”

The shavers who generously gave of their time and talents were Mike from Mica D’s Barbership in Ronkonkoma, Tony Mascolo and Erin from Mascolo International in Ronkonkoma, Mary McCauliffe, a Sachem substitute teacher on loan from Sachem East and Danielle Console, a parent and former classmate of Costa’s.

In March, Sachem East had it’s own head shaving extravaganza where more than 115 went bald. They doubled last year’s donation total of $15,000 and pulled in around $32,000. Sequoya Middle School also raised $30,000 on its own. Among the shavees at East was Nolan, who raised $3,645.
