Sachem North Boys Soccer Takes Down Sachem East

The Sachem North Boys Soccer team improved to .500 and matched a loss for a loss yesterday by beating Sachem East 4-1 on the chilly turf of the East campus.

"You know what; we beat them at their place earlier in the season, but they got us good today," said East Coach Matt Stallone. "It's tough when you get outworked. They wanted it a little bit more than we did, and in League I if you don't show up to play and you don't play hard and consistent all game long you're gonna get beaten."

Sachem North drew first and last blood, opening the scoring in the 16th minute with a strike from Harrison Weilbacher. Brandon Arango put North up 2-0 with a goal in the 36th minute.

It took until the 47th minute for Sachem East to break through, tightening the game to 2-1 with a goal from Vinny Oliveto, but North answered right back in the 51st minute with a rare goal from midfielder Brendan Chetuck on a high bouncing cross along the goal face.

"He had a big goal for us," North Coach Chris Russo said of Chetuck's strike. "You don't usually get them from a back necessarily, but he did a great job, he got in there. Stuck it home."

Harrison Weilbacher found the back of the net for the final goal in the 62nd minute for North, which improved to 5-5 overall. 

"This is a big win for us," Russo said. "It's actually a huge win. We've been building, getting better every time out, and today we had a good game. They're a very good team." 

East drops to 6-4 on the season, and will look to regroup against a very tough Ward Melville team that beat them 3-1 last month.

"We have things that need to be worked on," Stallone said. "Individual defending, clearing the ball, communication. Simple things. They don't forget how to play soccer in one day. So we'll go back to basics with hard work and with discipline and hopefully we can re-right the ship."

Sachem North will have an equally tough challenge at home against Commack on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
