Sachem East TD Club Hosts Budget Meeting

Board members answer questions to inform public before May 18 vote.

More than 70 people attended a budget meeting at the Sachem High School East library Wednesday evening, including all board members and people running for seats on the board of education.

Hosted by the Sachem East Touchdown Club, the meeting served as an information session to go over important details concerning the budget, which will be voted on May 18.

"The turnout of parents was excellent and most members of the East football team were also in attendance," said Mike Timo, a board member running unopposed. "It was a standing room only situation."

Most in attendance were concerned about the ramifications of a defeated budget said Timo, who spoke specifically about the modification to Sachem's current 2009-10 budget with the addition of the $3.5 million for the replacement of the upper roof at East.

"A contingency budget can have a significant negative impact on the academic, co-curricular and athletic programs," said Sal Tripi, who is running against Teri Ahearn to keep his seat on the board. "It's critical that people have access to all the information and have all their questions answered from reliable sources."

"I also urged those in attendance to exercise their right as a citizen of this great nation to get out and vote," Timo said. "Which way they vote is a personal decision, just get out and vote."

Superintendent James Nolan let the community know that Sachem's District Office personnel is available to answer any additional questions. Residents are encouraged to call or stop the office.

"The floor was opened up for general questions, and Mr. Falco and Mr. Nolan offered to stay after to answer questions if anyone had any," Ahearn said.

Most impressive may have been the comment regarding East supporting North and vice versa at sporting events.

"As one Sachem united again," Timo said. "Great ideas."
