Sachem East Girls Indoor Track Team Opens Season

Promising performances at Crossover A in Shot Put and Short Sprints.

 

The Sachem East Girls Indoor Track team opened it's season at Crossover A at Suffolk West on Tuesday with strong performances in a number of events, in particular the 55 Meter Dash, the 55 Hurdles, and the Shot Put.

Competing against 12 schools representing all the Suffolk Leagues, the East Flaming Arrows had at least one scorer in 12 of the 15 events contested in the meet.

Leading the way was the throwing squad, taking five of the six scoring places in the Shot Put. Diamond Jackson won with a throw of 37'.5" with Taylor Kern placing 3rd with 29'4", and Maddy Egan 4th at 28'2.5". Sydney Treanor (27'6.5") and Caitlin Raftice (26'9") grabbed 5th and 6th in a show of depth as veteran senior stars Brittany Sepe and Gabby Trejo sat out to provide coaching assistance.

East also had a particularly strong day in the short sprints. Shannon Haberkorn (9.68), Paige Picascio (9.81), and Katy Sullivan (9.88), went 1, 2, 3 in the 55 hurdles, while Ebonie Lewis (7.70), Essence Sterling (7.71), and Rebecca Carroll (8.21), went 1, 2, 6 in the 55. Just out of the scoring were Ashley Bean Mercado (8.22) and Katy Sullivan (8.37).

Other scoring performances in the field events were turned in by High Jumpers Alissa Naer (4th- 4'8") and Rachel Miller (6th-4'3"), and Long Jumper Amanda DiSalvo (5th- 14'3").

Laurie Semetsis won the 300 (44.90), and young distance runners Val Romero (5:42.09) and Courtney Evola (5:46.57) placed 4th and 5th in the 1500.

The Racewalk squad was led by Sarah LaPorta who placed 4th in 4:04.28 in the 800 meter Racewalk, with Jaimie Fleming (4:40.58) just out of the scoring.

In the final part of the meet, the relays, the squad of Casey Gelderman, Laurie Semetsis, Jenna Ulrich, and Ally Figalora placed 3rd in the 4 by 400 Relay (4:33.37), and the quartet of Ebonie Lewis, Shannon Haberkorn, Ashley Mercado, and Essence Sterling won the 4 by 200 Relay (1:54.16).

Having just completed their fall seasons, a number of Cross Country and Field Hockey athletes did not compete in this meet and will open up their competitive seasons at Crossover B next Monday.
