Sachem East Gets Trail Map, Thanks To Boy Scout

Sachem East senior helps build informative kiosk for cross-country team meets and its course trails.

Those who follow the Sachem East Cross Country teams can navigate the course a little better today thanks to a new trail map made possible by an East student seeking his Eagle Scout rank.

In a story first reported on The Sachem Report, Dan Christiansen, a senior at Sachem East carried out the plans originally set forth by East Track Coach Pete McNeill-- to have a posted board and kiosk with a laminated map of the school's trails, similar to what one would find in a county or state park.

According to the report, the Christiansens and Coach McNeill have deep ties. Dan's sister Brittany was a shot put specialist at East; she now attends Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

Dan Christiansen organized the kiosk's creation, which includes trail and event information and a red-brick patio at the foot of the structure, which residents can sponsor and have names or messages engraved. Christiansen coordinated the construction, set up the brick-buy process, raised funds and gathered the supplies for the new kiosk.

"My family were my main supporters in that they were always pushing me towards completion and getting Eagle,” he told Chris Vacarro, Sachem's communications director. “Upon completing the rank, it will be a badge on my chest forever showing the dedication and skills I have and can bring to any aspect of my life, whether it be a career, hobby, or social.”

So if you're looking for information on the next track meet, stop at the kiosk now in place between the baseball and football field at East.
