Sachem East Freshman Wins LI Brain Bee

The 14th Annual Brain Bee was held at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University last Saturday.

A freshman at Sachem East High School is the proud winner of the 14th Annual Brain Bee contest held last Saturday at LIU C.W. Post.

Chandana Kochath, a 9th-grader at East, beat out a senior at Jericho High School and a junior at Ward Melville to take home the title. The Brain Bee is a neuroscience trivia challenge that pits 53 students from across Long Island against one another.

Kochath will now move on to the National Brain Bee competition in Baltimore from March 2-4.

The Long Island contest was organized by university professors and was judged by the chairman of the Psychology Department at LIU as well as a professor within the department.

The Brain Bee is based upon students' knowledge retained from reading "Brain Facts," a 65-page primer on the brain and nervous system. The book, published by the Society for Neuroscience, is available for download at the LIU Brain Bee webpage, and LIU Professor Dr. Grace Rossi led free workshops to help review the vital information from the primer. Rossi will be coaching Kochath as she heads down to Baltimore for the National competition in March.
