Sachem East Field Hockey Trounces Northport

Katie Trombetta, recently named to the U.S. National Team, leads the way in scoring for Flaming Arrows.

The Sachem East Field Hockey team opened its season yesterday with a decisive victory on the road over Northport as Katie Trombetta netted two goals in the 5-0 shutout.

The team (1-0) went 21-1 last year en route to a state championship, and has much of its core players still on the team for another run this year.

According to Newsday's box score, Karyn Ryan and Kayla McKeveny scored a goal each and had two assists in the win. Katie Shanahan had a goal as well. The team opened up a 1-0 lead in the first half, and then poured it on with four goals in the second. Goalie Jordan Miller had four saves.

Yesterday, Newsday's Greg Sarra ranked the Sachem East girls as the #1 team in Fall sports. Lawrence Football and Brentwood Boys Soccer were second and third, respectively.

Trombetta, for under 17 players, was also listed as one of the Top 30 players to watch on Long Island.

East's next game is tomorrow at home against Newfield at 4 p.m. View the gallery for the team's full season schedule.
