Sachem East Field Hockey Defeats Ward Melville 2-1

Seniors step-up to help Sachem East overtake rival Ward Melville Tuesday afternoon.

The undefeated Sachem East Flaming Arrows Field Hockey team stayed that way on Tuesday by edging Ward Melville 2-1 in a tight battle.

Senior Kayla McKeveny scored her 12th goal of the season off a pass from Katie Trombetta three minutes into the first half to take an early 1-0 lead before the officials called a 20 minute lightning delay.

Once play resumed the two teams played a hard-fought and physical game in a cold and steady rain. Melville tied the score 1-1 with 12 minutes left in the game on a penalty corner.

With just under five minutes to play in regulation, though, Senior Nikki Healy scored her first goal of the season to give Sachem East a 2-1 lead. Senior defensmen Stephanie Bagley and Karen Ryan along with senior goalie Jordan Miller kept Melville off the score board to seal the victory. In eight games this season Miller has only allowed only 3 goals.

Sachem East takes on Division I rival Northport today at home at 5:15 p.m. Their biggest challenge and game of the season takes place on Columbus Day, October 8 when the Flamming Arrows take on undefeated and defending Class B Long Island Champion Garden City. Game time for that matchup is 12 p.m. on the turf at Sachem East.
