Sachem Alums Power Dowling Lacrosse to National Title

East grad Vito DeMola scores four times as Dowling wins its first ever lacrosse championship.

Sachem alums scored nearly half the goals for Dowling College Sunday to lead the Golden Lions lacrosse team to its first ever national title.

Vito DeMola, a Sachem East grad, tallied four goals and two assists in Dowling's 11-10 victory against Limestone at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

“I always had a plan of ‘I’m gonna do this if we win the national championship,’ or ‘I’m gonna kiss the trophy,’ or ‘I want to run around with the flag.’ But as soon as that buzzer went off I didn’t know what to do,” said DeMola, according to NCAA.com. “I was like where’s our goalie, where’s our face-off guy, who’s that kissing me on the cheek?”

Billy Richardson, a sophomore attacker for Dowling and a Sachem North grad, also scored a goal for the Golden Lions on Sunday.

James Kenny, a freshman defender for the new Division II national champions, is also a North graduate.

DeMola, who scored the game winning goal Sunday, led Dowling in scoring this year with 36 goals and 12 assists.

“This sums it up all right here,” DeMola said at the post-game press conference, referring to the championship trophy, according to NCAA.com's report. “There’s nothing I would trade, not one moment of my career I wish I change because in the end, it led to this trophy.”
