The Sachem East Field Hockey team will vie for its second straight Long Island Championship tonight when they travel to Adelphi University to take on Massapequa, after securing the Suffolk title with a 3-0 victory over Bay Shore.
The championship game, played at Fred Fusaro Stadium on the grounds of Sachem High School North, featured scoring from the Trombetta sisters, Cara and Michigan-bound Katie, as well as an exclamation goal from Katie Shanahan, according to the Sachem Report.
Bay Shore had a penalty shot in the game, but goalie Jordan Miller stopped the shot and secured the shutout.
Sachem East has rolled through everybody these past two seasons, putting up a record of 39-1. Its only loss, a regular season match against Smithtown East.
On Sunday, Sachem East shut out Ward Melville, as Shanahan netted both goals in the 2-0 victory that sent them to the county finals. In the opening round of the playoffs on Saturday, East dominated West Islip 8-1 with goals from eight different players. In case you haven't noticed the Hurricane Sandy-inspired schedule, tonight's LI Championship game will be the fourth game in as many days for the girls.
"Your body gets tired and your brain gets tired,” Head Coach Tina Moon told the Sachem Report. “You have to do things to mentally prepare yourself even more because your legs are tired, but we’re focused.”
