Q&A: Meagan Doherty, BOE Student Member

This year's new student member from East talks about what she hopes to gain from her experience on the Board of Education this year, and more.

Every year, the Sachem Central School District Board of Edcuation allows students from both high schools to serve as a member on the board. Meagan Doherty, a senior at Sachem East, will be serving on the board this year. Sachem Patch talked with Doherty about her expectations for this experience, as well as what she hopes to gain from it.

Sachem Patch: What got you interested in becoming a student board member?

Meagan Doherty: I was interested in becoming the Student Government President at East, I wanted to learn more and be a bigger part of the school and the Sachem School District.

MD: As a student board member, I am hoping to give some opinions from my experiences as a student in the district to give them a different perspective when they are making their decisions.

MD: I am expecting to learn a lot throughout the year and to gain a better understanding of the challenges the district faces and how they are dealt with on the administrative level.

SP: This upcoming academic year will most likely be very tough financially on the district and the Board. Does that idea intimidate you at all?

MD: No, I am confident that they will work it all out and that everything will be fine for this upcoming year.

SP: Do you have any suggestions as to what the Board can do differently this year?

MD: I wasn't a member last year so I can't make any suggestions until I have more of an understanding of the problems the district is having.

SP: Is government/politics a field you would like to go into for your career?

MD: No, I am planning on going to school for finance and accounting.

SP: What do you hope to gain from this whole experience?

MD: I hope to become more knowledgeable about the district and to really understand how the board deals with all the challenges and how they implement changes in order to keep the community happy.
