Police Investigate 'Perceived Threat" at Sequoya Middle School

Suffolk County police were at Sequoya Middle School Thursday morning searching backpacks following a rumor that a student at the school had made a list containing the names of a few other students he wanted to harm.

Police said they were notified of a "perceived threat" at the middle school on Wednesday and officers went to the school Thursday to monitor the situation.

"There didn't appear to be an imminent threat to the student body," a police spokeswoman told Patch Thursday afternoon.

In automated calls to parents Thursday, the district said the student rumored to have made the list was searched and his parents were notified. No list or weapon was found, according to the call.

"The school district looked into a rumor this morning with the help of Suffolk County Police," district spokesman Chris Vaccaro said in an email. "It was handled by building officials and police with student and teacher safety as the primary concern."
