North Teacher Named LICSS Teacher of the Year, Many Art Students Receive Awards

Other students recognized, several action items approved at Wednesday's Board of Education Meeting.

Dr. Georgia Afxendiou, a social studies teacher at Sachem High School North, was named Long Island Council for the Social Studies (LICSS) Teacher of the Year and was recognized at Wednesday's Sachem Central School District Board of Education held at Samoset Middle School.

Afxendiou, who teaches several advanced placement social studies courses, is also the founder of the Model United Nations club at North.

"I'm truly touched, this is the second year," Afxendiou said about her honor. "I'm proud to be a member of the Sachem family. There's nothing to motivate you like the students at Sachem North."

Also receiving honors and awards were many students from East and North for their achievements in their art classes, as well as throughout Long Island.

Juniors Garima Yadav and Ruchi Shah from North were recognized for their outstanding research projects in biology and chemistry at the Long Island Regional Science Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Yadav and Shah, as well as student Allyson Gruber from North, were also acknowledged for their projects in the Long Island Science Congress.

Other recognitions include the Chippewa Drama Club, which performed two songs from its production of "The Jungle Book," and the 2010-11 Sachem retirees. Departing board member Michael Licata and departing vice president Jim LaCarrubba, as well as departing student board members Jimmy Ye from East and Kelly Gochan from North all received recognitions.

  • The Parent-Teacher Association created 50 $500 scholarships to award to graduating seniors.
  • The New York State School Board Association (NYSSBA) released a petition for community members to sign to stop Gov. Andrew Cuomo's two-percent property tax cap. It will be posted on the Sachem district website soon.
  • Sachem's Relay for Life, which took place this past weekend at North, raised about $50,000. In total, Sachem has raised half a million dollars through Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.
  • Jason Mauro was appointed as the new dean at Sachem North, replacing , who retired this year.
  • The July reorganizational board meeting will take place July 6 at Samoset at the usual 7:30 p.m. start time.
