Merrimac Students Hold Fundraiser For Sandy Victims

"We Give Our Hearts" campaign launched by two fourth-graders to raise funds for Hurricane Sandy relief.

The Hurricane Sandy Long Island Disaster Relief Fund will soon be getting a warm-hearted donation thanks to a couple fourth-grade students at Merrimac Elementary School.

Madison Hicks and Olivia Paquette, two students in Ms. Guider's class at Merrimac will be conducting a fundraiser during the school's lunch periods tomorrow to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Hicks and Paquette will be making the round in the Merrimac cafeteria tomorrow carrying a jar full of candy and asking students to pay $1 for a guess at how much candy is in the jar. The winner will receive the jar of treats, while Hicks and Paquette will donate the proceeds to the Sandy Relief Fund.

"They decided one day they wanted to do something to help the victims of Sandy on Long Island, Madison's mother, Karen Hicks, explained in an email to Patch. "They came up with a fundraiser and named it "Guess How Much Candy for Sandy." Karen Hicks said the girls were moved by seeing all the devastation last fall's hurricane caused to communities on Long Island.

The lunchroom fundraiser will be going on throughout the day on Tuesday. In addition, each student that donates $1 for a guess at the candy jar will fill out a paper heart to be hung up at the school. The girls are calling that part of the campaign "We Give Our Hearts To Sandy Victims."
