Important Registration Dates, Seminars at Schools

Sachem Patch launches new college tips column.

Welcome to the first installment of this new column on Sachem Patch ... if you're a parent looking for information on colleges, or a student hoping to find out about that last minute SAT registration date, it's all here.

Attention high school juniors!  Your first day of college is in September 2012. It might seem far away, but it requires planning now. Luckily, the Sachem guidance department is presenting two Junior Parent/Student College workshops to help jump start your college process.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Sachem High School East auditorium, college admission representatives will discuss finding the right college, how colleges review transcripts, the components of the application process, who gets accepted and why, followed by a question and answer session.

On Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Sachem High School North Auditorium, the presentation will focus on what juniors should be doing now in regard to testing and recommendations, a Naviance workshop, the financial aid process – how it works and what is available, followed by a question and answer session.

Parents and students are asked to attend both nights to provide this important information.  If you have any questions about these workshops, please call Mona Hecht, Administrative Assistant for Guidance at 631-471-1705.

The Sachem High School East and North guidance department websites offer comprehensive college planning tools.  Both websites are an excellent place to start with the college information, search and application process.

A prime place to start exploring colleges is the Naviance Family Connection.  Naviance is a web based service provided to all Sachem High School students.  It assists students and parents with college planning.  Students and parents can access this website from home.

Naviance includes college searches, maps comparison and acceptance history, a schedule of Colleges visiting East and North, college acceptance data, comparing your GPA, standard test scores and other statistics with actual students who applied to the same colleges.  Through Naviance you may view your personal record of standardized test scores, averages and prospective colleges.  A Naviance workshop will be provided at the Jan. 20 meeting.  To access the Naviance site you need a family and student registration code provided by your guidance counselor.

Important upcoming dates:  College Board SAT I test registration for the March 12, 2012 exam is Feb. 11, 2011.  The ACT test registration for the April 9, 2011 exam is March 4, 2011.
