Hiawatha Students Have Plant In

Add to long list of community service initiatives that school takes part in.

Hiawatha students recently had a planting session at the school.

Second graders completed a community service project each month this school year.

They have written letters to soldiers overseas, made Halloween decorations for the residents of an assisted living facility, created place mats for Meals on Wheels clients, collected essential supplies for a local animal shelter, held a food drive for a local food pantry, collected books for DDI Lake Ronkonkoma, and decorated reusable grocery bags for the food pantry they donated to in January.

The fifth graders annually clean and plant in the garden beds around the school. “They graciously allowed us to help them this year,” said Hiawatha teacher Leslie Routh. “It was quite the event and everyone had a wonderful time.”

The teachers involved are: Routh, Tracy Walter, Tiffany Bistyga, and Marie Page.
