Grundy Hopes to Raise 800 Pounds of Food for National School Food Drive

Taking part in program that nationally aims to raise over 5 million pounds of food.

Grundy Avenue Elementary School has joined forces with other schools across the country to help end hunger in America, one food pantry at a time.

On March 1, Grundy launched a four-week food drive to benefit a local pantry within the Sachem community. This is one of thousands of similar drives taking place across the country as part of the first annual Schools Serve: National School Food Drive.

The national goal is to raise more than 5 million pounds of food for local pantries.  Grundy’s goal is to raise 1,400 food items or 800 pounds of food. In one week's time they've collected 395 items equivalent to approximately 400 pounds of food.

“Our kids and our whole school community are always so generous,” said Eileen Regina, coordinator of the Grundy Avenue food drive and president of the school’s PTA. “Our drive is a great chance to help those in need and to teach our children about the importance of giving back. It’s easy to forget that there are so many families in need right here in our community.  Food drives are mostly held during the holiday season so now is the perfect time to help replenish the pantries that are in need.”

The Schools Serve: National School Food Drive initiative brings U.S. schools together to fight hunger and inspire schoolchildren to serve. Complete details on this new national effort can be found at www.schoolsserve.org.
