Five Sachem Wrestlers Headed To Albany Tourney

Four others will join county champion Gio Santiago to compete in state championships.

Sachem will be represented by five varsity wrestlers this week as they head to Albany to participate in the New York State Wrestling Championships. 

Gio Santiago, who recently secured an individual Suffolk County Championship last week at Walt Whitman High School, will be joined by Steve Mills, Jackson Mordente, Conor O'Hara and Cristian Nunez as they head to the state's capital.

Santiago is the only wrestler who secured a trip to Albany with his championship victory. The other four qualified as wild card selections and were notified they'd be making the trip north on Friday.

Mills is a student athlete at the North campus, Mordente, O'Hara and Nunez are students at East.

According to a release of the results from the Sachem Report, at the county tournament, Mordente was a runner-up at 145, Mills was a runner-up at 220, O’Hara placed third at 138 and Nunez placed third at 195.

The state tourney begins on Friday, February 22 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
