East Breaks Blood Drive Record

Has tremendous outpouring of support from community.

Sachem East held the first of three blood drives for the 2010-11 school year two weeks ago. They raised 314 pints of blood, breaking the previous record of 299.

Sachem East also smashed a Long Island Blood Services record by securing 54 donations using the ALYX Component Collection machine. That previous record was 49.

The event is organized by the Interact Volunteer Club, which is advised by Sachem East science teacher Rich Lemke.

"A majority of the blood collected came from our students and even some of our alumni," said East principal Rory Manning. "We also had a strong showing from local residents. They recognize the fact that we face a serious blood shortage and they selflessly gave of themselves to save others.  It was a remarkable day."

East's next blood drive is Feb. 3.
