Casali Wins Hansen Award; Mills Wins Zellner Award

Representing both Sachem High School East and North, Casali, Mills take top honors at Coaches Association Awards last night.

Star runningback and linebacker for Sachem East Steven Casali has been awarded the Hansen for his outstanding (and record-setting) season with the East Flaming Arrows. On the same night, Sachem North outstanding offensive lineman Steve Mills took the Zellner Award.

Casali led his team all the way to the Suffolk County Championships this year before losing to William Floyd, the eventual Long Island champs. According to the Sachem Report, Casali rushed for 1,915 yards and scored 20 touchdowns on the season, a new record at the school.

The honor also marks the first time a player has won a Hansen Award while playing for a coach who also won the honor. Coach Mark Wojciechowski won the Hansen in 1985 as a star linebacker.

On the same night, Sachem North's Steve Mills took home the Zellner Award for his outstanding season as an offensive lineman on a team that ran its offense on ground-and-pound. Zellner joins two other Sachem players in history to take home the Zellner, according to the Sachem Report. In 1983, Michael Farley secured the school's first. Peter Maiello repeated the honor in 1990.
