BOE Profiles: David Egloff

Sachem Patch talks with Sachem Board of Education members.

This July will mark David Egloff's first full year as a member of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, and his assessment of his experience is both insightful and honest.

"There is so much going on in a school district of this size, and always so much to do. The first year has been a big learning curve, but it's been great. I love being a part of it all," he said. "The biggest learning curve includes the understanding of the legal sides of the school district. In the first year, we negotiated fair deals with the different unions and hired a new superintendent. These are two major items that I look back and see as tremendous accomplishments."

Egloff, a Sachem graduate in 1994, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Sacred Heart University in 1998 with a degree in Psychology. Later, he earned a Master's Degree in Management & Systems from NYU before spending seven years on Wall Street.

Currently he manages a a sales finance group at Motorola. He and his wife live in Farmingville with their two children. Serving on the Board is a way for Egloff to give back for what he took away from his experience as a student at Sachem.

"I loved my experiences at Sachem," he said. "The more I think about my experiences at Sachem, the more I realize that it was the people behind the institution that really made a difference in my life. I don't recall specific tests or even games; instead, I recall the teachers and coaches that helped me along the way.

"I realized that Sachem is great because of the people. From administration to teachers to the staff that keeps it all together in the background, people care about students and life at Sachem. I wanted to be one of those people that were a contributor to Sachem's greatness and not just a taker."

Egloff is also enjoying the diversity of the board members and he has enjoyed only good experiences this past year.

"The board is filled with a great group of people who have a lot of different backgrounds and perspectives, but a common theme of making Sachem great," he said. "I just wanted to roll my sleeves up and work with them to continue Sachem's legacy. I haven't had any bad experiences. With all of the things to do in my first year, the number of hours were somewhat surprising. It's a labor of love though."

Egloff hopes his financial experience and dedication to the community will continue to make a difference in his upcoming years as a board member.

"I have a financial background and thought it might be useful. I understand that we are going to go through challenging times with New York State and that families in our districts are suffering through personal difficulties. People are out of work or subject to income decreases. I want to be sure that we are doing right by the taxpayer as well as by the school district," he said.

Egloff looks forward to his future with help from anyone willing to offer an opinion.

"I'm always open to feedback and input from the community," he said. "I truly welcome and value those emails."
