Area Scholarship Deadlines Loom

As Class of 2013 enters final half of year, college scholarships are there for the taking.

Deadlines for a number of Sachem area scholarships are on the horizon as Sachem Class of 2013 graduates begin to think about college in September.

The following deadlines are listed in chronological order:

April 3 --Friends of the Sachem Library

For Sachem High School Seniors, applications for two (2) Friends of Sachem Library Scholarships are available in the guidance offices of  Sachem North and Sachem East High Schools and at the Sachem Library Teen  Services desk. 

The deadline for filing is April 3, 2013.  This year’s  theme is “How My Life Would Have Been Different If There Had Been No Sachem  Public Library,”  and you must complete a minimum 500, 600 maximum, word  essay.  (Word count, grammar correct format, originality are  required).

April 12 -- Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce

The Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce is offering its "Time to Make a Difference" scholarship program for the second consecutive year.

The $500 scholarship is open to any Class of 2013 student enrolled at Sachem High School East, that plans to attend an accredited college, vocational or trade school in the fall. The winner will be asked to provide an acceptance letter to receive the scholarship.

To apply for the endowment, the Chamber is asking entrants to put together a three to five minute video presentation that suggests ways in which Farmingville can be improved. The entrant does not need to appear in the video.

Once the video is created, entrants must "like" the Chamber's Facebook page and upload the video to the page. The top 5 videos to receive the most "likes" by April 26 will become finalists. The Chamber will select a winner from the five finalists. 

All entries are due to be posted on the Facebook page wall by April 12.

April 17 -- Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization

The Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization, is offering a $500 scholarship to any January or June, 2013 graduating senior  who intends to go on to college and lives within the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic  Organization boundaries (see webpage).

The application and activities verification packet can be picked up in the
Sachem North High School  Guidance Office or the Teen Desk at
Sachem Public Library.

A 500-word essay  on "How I Have Made A Contribution To My Community" is required, and contents, correct formatting, and grammar will be counted. Outstanding finalists will be invited to appear for an interview. The essay should include details of any volunteer work taken part in as well as Lake Ronkonkoma  community activities participated in over the years.
